Are you saving enough?Pension savers have lost a total of £26.4 million to pension scams in the past few years.
Figures released by the Pensions Management Institute (PMI) show that over £26 million was lost to pension scams between 2020 and 2022. During the same time, 1,595 pension scams were reported in England and Wales. The damage equates to an average loss of £16,500 per pensioner. That’s the equivalent of a full year’s living expenses for a pensioner with a moderate standard of living, in line with the Retirement Living Standards (RLS).
The Covid-19 pandemic grouped with the cost of living crisis seem to have created the perfect ecosystem for scammers to thrive in and become even more dangerous.
In the midst of the pandemic, in 2021, reports of pension scams increased by 45%, according to the Money & Pensions Service (MAPS). Evidently, fraudsters tried - and on many occasions succeeded – in taking advantage of the widespread anxiety
caused by the pandemic.
The cost of living crisis could also be one of the reasons for the increasing prevalence of pension scams. Often, fraudsters prey on people’s vulnerability and anxiety for meeting financial demands. They take advantage of the urgency and desperation
some savers experience.
They are ruthless and will use every opportunity they get to trick you out of your pension. Staying vigilant and wise to the increasingly sophisticated methods used by scammers even at times of extreme financial constraints is exceptionally important.
Pension scams are extremely dangerous, however since the cost of living crisis struck, other types of scams have occurred too. For example, those offering ‘help’ with:

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) estimates that less than 1 in 5 instances of scams are reported.
One of the reasons for this is the trauma of lost savings and the shame victims feel. People feel embarrassed if they are being tricked so hearing the stories of others can act as a catalyst for more people to come forward and share their story.

that the delay in realising people have been scammed makes scamming attractive to criminals. This is why it is important we all do what we can to prevent scams.

Matt’s current portfolio of clients covers ongoing, paid-up and winding-up schemes. In addition, Matt has experience of schemes that have transferred or are in the process of transferring to the Pension Protection Fund and Financial Assistance Scheme. Matt also works closely with clients in relation to risk registers and internal controls.
Matt particularly enjoys resolving issues in a fair and pragmatic way ensuring that the right result is reached for the member or employer.
Sam Burden

Sam Burden joined Zedra Governance (formerly PTL) in 2022. He is an Accredited Professional Pension Trustee (AMAPPT) and an Associate of the Pensions Management Institute (APMI)
Sam has more than 25 years’ experience in the pensions industry gained with WTW, KPMG, and Standard Life working with a wide range of pension schemes and sponsoring employers. His trustee appointments include DB, DC and hybrid pension schemes and he has experience of handling a broad range of projects relating to the management of pension schemes.
Beyond his pensions experience Sam is a former Birmingham City Councillor where he chaired the audit committee and a current charity trustee.
Payam Kazemian

Payam Kazemian joined Zedra Governance Limited (formerly PTL Governance Limited) in 2021. He is an Accredited Professional Pension Trustee (AMAPPT) and an Associate of the Pensions Management Institute (APMI).
Payam has more than 17 years of experience in the pensions industry. Through his current role as a professional trustee, as well as previously as a pension’s de-risking and investment structuring expert at financial institutions including Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank, he has had overall responsibility for creating investment, de-risking, journey planning, and governance solutions for a wide range of UK DB pension schemes. He currently holds a number of board positions (as Chair of Trustees) and sole trustee in his professional trustee capacity. Payam has been involved with a number of pensions projects including pensions buy-in, pensions buy-out, GMP equalisation, investment strategy reviews, and dialogue with the pensions regulator. Payam looks to create and believes in a collaborative relationship between the sponsor, the trustee, and all other parties involved as this results in best member outcomes and helps deliver pragmatic solutions for scheme. Aside from his pensions experience, Payam holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Cambridge.
